Lifestyle Photography.....hipster for "my real life".......
I am a "lifestyle photographer." I actually Googled what that means....cause while I sort of have an idea of what it means, I wanted the cold hard facts.
Per Wikipedia.. "Lifestyle photography is a kind of photography which mainly aims to capture portrait/people in situations, real-life events or milestones in an artistic manner and the art of the everyday. The primary goal is to tell stories about people's life or to inspire people in different times. Thus, it covers multidisciplinary types of photography together. A lifestyle photographer is not only a portrait or people photographer and loves/enjoys photography as art in everyday life but is believed to be talented in photography that can also do well in other many disciplines of photography at a time such as landscape, street photography, fashion, wedding and even wildlife with one's unique vision to inspire people's life."
That is a mouthful. Sooooo basically, it's photography. In the present moment. So, its like the mindfulness portion of photography.
WOOOOSAAAHHHHH (If you are over 30 you get that joke, if you are under 30 you need to see the movie
Bad Boys ASAP)
Carrying on....I document EVERYTHING. If you are my personal friend, and are on my IG and FB you see pics all day long of my life. I love it. There's a few reasons I do this. I love my kids, and they do epic stuff all day. It's great practice, and keeps my photography ninja skills on point. And, it connects me with other parents who have the same crazy stuff going on in their homes, but are too scared to share it. For fear, of how they "might look."
I am not scared. This is my life. And I am grateful for it.
Like the air I breathe, and a good wheat beer. I basically, live for this stuff.
Now, you're thinking "my photos don't look like yours Blaire." True. I am a profesh. Or at in the very least, I am working towards owning that title. HOWEVER....allow me to assist you in your "hipster real life, mindfully present, photo snapping" adventures.....
PROTIP: For photographing your kids so they look authentically them, and not some weird, staged, forced, pretty princess version you see in frames at Target.
Let them play. Let them scream. Let them do whatever they feel joyful (or rage filled whatever is happening) in doing, and click that shutter until you can't click anymore! Play with your kids. Don't try too hard. Laugh at their crazy. Don't brush their hair. Cuddle their boo boos. Tell them jokes. Ask them to tell you jokes. And let them be kids. Let YOURSELF be a kid. No pressure. No expectation. Be present with them. Allow them, the gift of being present with you.
If you want pretty shots of your kids being authentically them.. go somewhere in your home where there is sunshine, and dust in the air that I call "house glitter." It adds to the effect. *wink*
Oh and, don't clean up before you start. No one cares if your house is messy. Or if there is a dirty diaper on the coffee table in the shot (yes, I have done this. And no, I don't care)....just take the image as it is happening. That is being present, and mindful, and real. And those are the memories you will want later in life. Because my friends, one day there won't be that kid screaming or laughing or needing you to change their diaper. And you will be well rested, but sad. The upside is, you will have those raw and very real images to look back on. And laugh. That is what it is about.
Seriously. Don't take this so seriously. Just play. And the magic will reveal itself on film, forever.
