Today I read another stupid article about another museum removing another painting because someone was offended. It will be boxed up, never to see public light again. I can't. My brain hurts.
This is the piece. The reason? The person who decided it was offensive doesn't like that it depicts women luring a man to his demise. There also is a nipple.
This comes on the heels of some yahoo group in NYC who wants to remove a painting of a girl from the MET, because in their mind "it's inappropriate." Thérèse Dreaming” by the French artist Balthus
What's next, The David? The Vitruvian Man? Why not? I AM OFFENDED.
Let's close museums.
I have had people comment (and report) on photos I post of my own kids. It's ridiculous.
So, I have to ask you....in all these scenarios, who is in the wrong here? The artist? Or the people who's heads are in the gutter.
I feel it's the latter. Please don't get me twisted. I am not pushing porn. I care about protecting art.
If you actually take a moment to open a history book, you may realize that up until about 200 years ago the naked body was celebrated. Women were painted with precision and care, the likeness of men were cast in stone. Nipples were not taboo, breasts were not off limits and certainly art was left the hell alone.
What has changed? This worries me, deeply.
To the shock of many, I love nude art. The female form is so incredible, it's a life force. The crappy thing is, I live in a very conservative place where I fear if I actually allowed myself the freedom to take nude photos I would be shunned, my kids tormented. So I don't. But man, I sure wish I could......
Please, leave art alone. If you don't like it then don't buy a ticket to the museum. Don't buy the book or watch the film. It's really that simple.
Art belongs to all of us. Let's keep it that way.
